The Power Of Good News

Recently, we talked about the power of the promises of God. Every promise of God is as certain and unchanging as He is. Hebrews 6:17-18 says,

“So, when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he guaranteed it with an oath, so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us.”

That’s a very powerful scripture. Simplified, it’s essentially saying that God’s promises are
certain. He made an oath – a covenant with His people. However, His word would have been more than enough, because it’s impossible for Him to lie. Based on those two things – a God who cannot lie and a covenant ratified by the blood of Jesus – we have hope that cannot be shaken.

We’ve looked at some of His promises recently along with Scripture references. As a reminder, here are just a few of the things God has guaranteed by His word:

1. Eternal life (Titus 1:2)

2. Joy (Psalm 16:11)

3. Love (Romans 8:38-39)

4. Peace (John 14:27)

5. Protection (Psalm 91:1-2)

6. Healing (1 Peter 2:24)

7. Provision (Matthew 6:31-33)

8. Guidance (John 16:13)

9. Friendship (Psalm 25:14)

10. The Holy Spirit (Luke 24:49)

11. Power (Acts 1:8)

However, if you don’t know the truth of those promises in your heart and receive them, they
won’t be yours. If you don’t walk in the reality of His Word, it doesn’t make God’s promises any less true, but you won’t live in them.

When Jesus came to earth, His birth was announced to shepherds and to a select few who knew the King had been born. However, the impact of His life didn’t start until He began His ministry at 30 years of age. The first time He publicly read Scripture, He opened the scroll to the book of Isaiah and read a portion that spoke of Him, saying,

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because He has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” (Luke 4:18-19)

He was the Good News, but that good news had to be proclaimed. He went about preaching the Gospel, healing the sick, raising the dead, and teaching that the Kingdom of God was at hand. Jesus came to the world to demonstrate that it was possible to live on earth as if it were heaven. He demonstrated that it is possible, in Him, to live in unity with the Father and see the truth of Heaven’s reality invade earth.

Sickness fled. Darkness fled. The broken were healed. The dead were raised. Jesus was the Gospel. After He ascended, He told His disciples that same gospel would be proclaimed to all the earth. Matthew 24:14 says,

“And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.”

The Gospel of the Kingdom, Jesus Christ, is the answer to every problem. His promises are as sure as the sun rising. However, they must be proclaimed, because unless they are received the promises will remain promises for the future. Romans 10:14-15 says,

“How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”’

The Gospel must be preached so the truth of His Word can be received. God never changes. Jesus Christ suffered and died on a cross for every human being that has ever lived. His promises are always the same. He loves the world more than we will ever understand, however, there are countless masses that live without knowing the truth. Sickness, darkness, bondage, and oppression reign in every place that the truth of the Gospel has not been proclaimed. Jesus said Kingdom of Heaven is at hand, but it must be proclaimed so it can be received! Many will have heard the story of a Japanese lieutenant named Hiroo Onoda. He was sent to a small island in the Philippines during WWII, and through a series of events, was not made aware the war had ended for thirty years. He spent three decades fighting a war that had already been won. The fact that he continued to fight didn’t make the end of the war any less true. So many live the very same way because they have not received the truth of God’s Word!

The woman with the issue of blood pushed through the crowd, reached out for Jesus, and
received her healing, standing on a promise she already believed. She had already heard the good news about Jesus and determined in her heart that God would heal her if she could just get to Him. She received truth and acted on it, and a miracle was the result! However, in order for that to happen, someone had to tell her about the Rabbi who carried heaven. Someone had to tell her about the One who could fix what twelve years of treatment could not. She had to first hear the truth before she could act upon it!

The promises of God are not poetic truths for Sunday morning. They are a blueprint for the reality that we can live in if we receive what God has given us. We have to get those promises on the inside of us. We must read them, listen to them, say them, and believe them until they are the loudest truth in our hearts. We have to learn to stand on His promises until we aren’t just reading them on a page, but we’re seeing His kingdom come before our very eyes. His Word is the same yesterday, today, and forever, and every one of His promises are for you!
