The Power Of A Promise

The Bible tells us that “all the promises of God find their Yes in [Jesus Christ].” Have you ever thought about the power of that truth? Before Jesus ever walked the earth, the Father made promises that were fulfilled in Him for you.

Isaiah 53:4-5, written hundreds of years before Jesus was born, says,

“Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed Him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But He was pierced for our transgressions; He was crushed for our iniquities; upon Him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with His wounds we are healed.”

2 Peter 2:24, written after Jesus ascended, says,

“[Jesus] Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By His wounds you have been healed.”

The promise of our healing was given before Jesus ever died on the cross but in Him, we have access to the fullness of what the Father promised.

Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8), and the promises of God are as unchanging as He is!

However, it’s only when we know what He’s promised that we can walk in the fullness of His will for our lives. It’s so important to read the Bible and spend time with Him so we know what He has for us and don’t settle for less!

Abraham and Sarah are an example of individuals who had to take hold of the promises of God. In the story in Genesis (especially chapters 19 and 21), God promised two people, well past the time for bearing children, that they would have a son. There was a gap of many years between the promise and the arrival of their son, Isaac, and during that time, they did not always live in faith. Abraham had a son with Sarah’s servant, trying to bring God’s promise to fulfillment himself, and it caused all kinds of problems. Sarah laughed in disbelief when she heard that she would bear a son after a lifetime of barrenness. However, the New Testament, inspired by the Holy Spirit, gives us insight into their hearts. At some point, through relationship and encounter with God, they must have stepped fully into faith. Romans 4:18-21 says this of Abraham:

“ In hope he believed against hope, that he should become the father of many nations, as he had been told, “So shall your offspring be.” He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body, which was as good as dead (since he was about a hundred years old), or when he considered the barrenness of Sarah's womb.   No unbelief made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised.”

He was fully convinced that God was able to do what He promised. That’s a verse many Christians know, however, it’s important to understand that Sarah too had to believe God’s promise. Hebrews 11:11 says,

“By faith Sarah herself received power to conceive, even when she was past the age, since she considered him faithful who had promised.”

She considered Him faithful who had promised.

In both of these verses we see that their belief was based on God’s faithfulness. Abraham considered Him able, and Sarah considered Him faithful.

The power of any promise is based on the one who gives it. We can trust all the promises of God, not because our circumstances will always perfectly reflect them; not because everything will always be easy; but because God is always able, and He is always faithful to His Word.

By the blood of Jesus, we are co-heirs with Jesus Christ – meaning we have inherited every promise of the Father Jesus walked in.

To conclude this week, I want to share just a few promises He’s given us.

1. Eternal life - Titus 1:2:

“…in the hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before the beginning of time”

2. Joy – Psalm 16:11:

“You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.”

3. Love – Romans 8:38-39:

For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

4. Peace – John 14:27:

“ Peace, I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.

5. Protection – Psalm 91:1-2:

“Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”

6. Healing – 1 Peter 2:24:

“He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by His wounds you have been healed.”

7. Provision – Matthew 6:31-33:

“So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

8. Guidance – John 16:13:

“But when the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth.”

9. Friendship – Psalm 25:14:

“The friendship of the LORD is for those who fear Him, and He makes known to them His covenant.”

10. The Holy Spirit – Luke 24:49:

“And behold, I (Jesus) am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”

11. Power – Acts 1:8:

“You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

I encourage you today to believe and take hold of every promise of God! Spend time in the Bible like the treasure that it is. Every word was breathed by the Holy Spirit and it’s for you.

His word is peace.
His word is life.
His word is light.
His word never changes.
His word is hope.
His word is Jesus.
