This week, I’ve been thinking about how important it is to have confidence in God. The Bible says that in the last days, everything will be shaken, but Hebrews 12:28 says,
“Therefore, let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire.”
The Kingdom of God is the only thing that cannot be shaken. Nations rise and fall. Leaders come and go. Societies and cultures shift and change. Only our God never changes, and we have full assurance of that truth regardless of our circumstances.
Luke 6:46-49 records one of Jesus’ parables along these lines. He said,
“Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you? Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.”
Only a life built on the Word of God is unshakeable. When things shake, you’ll realize what’s been built on your efforts, your abilities, and your resources. Proverbs 3:5-6 says,
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and He will make straight your paths. Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD, and turn away from evil. It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones.”
Our hope must be found only in God and His Word. Our wisdom and understanding, even if it’s Biblical knowledge, can never be our foundation. Trusting in God means remaining steadfast even when we don’t understand. Those are the moments we must lean into the truth of His Word with everything we have.
We are encouraged to have confidence many times throughout the book of Hebrews. Oxford dictionary defines confidence as the feeling or belief that one can rely on someone or something; firm trust; or the state of feeling certain about the truth of something.
We have such great need for confidence in the church in this hour and we can’t place it in ourselves, a ministry, a job, or a person. Our confidence must be firmly placed in Him alone.
Hebrews 3:6 says,
“And we are [God’s] house, if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.”
Hebrews 3:14 says,
“For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end.”
Hebrews 4:16 says,
“Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”
Hebrews 10:19-20;23 says,
“Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh…Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.”
Our confidence is in His faithfulness.
Our hope is in His promise.
He alone is ultimately unchanging, and we can rest in that truth. Our confidence is in a God who never moves. He is faithful and true. He is good and kind. He knows everything about us and loves us. If you feel like things are shaking, in your life or in the world, rest in the truth that He’s on the throne.
Proverbs 14:26 says,
“In the fear of the LORD one has strong confidence…”
Hebrews 10:35 says,
“Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward.”
This week, I want to encourage you to hold fast to the One who cannot be shaken. Your confidence in Him has a great reward. Our political, social, and economic context is ever-changing. Your understanding, your circumstances, and your emotions will always shift and change. However, our lives are not built on those things. As believers, our hope is built on the rock that is Christ and we have a hope that cannot fade! Be encouraged today to run in the knowledge of that truth with confidence! We have a great high priest over the house of God, over us, always interceding on our behalf. The same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in us. The Father has never moved from His throne, and He will accomplish all that He has purposed. We have every reason for confidence!
